About Budle Bay

Interestingly, in the 13th-century, this gorgeous little bay was the port of Bamborough, and vessels crossed the southern tip to reach warren mill. In more recent times, this mill has been used as a malting house for the production of Barley used by a local brewer.

Budle Bay is a wonderous place, the shallow estuary is almost totally enclosed, and it is used by many species of wildlife as winter roosting territory. Graylag geese, gulls and wildfowl come all the year round, the mud flats here provide good hunting ground for food and to rest or winter.

The wide sweep of this beautiful bay is now a nature reserve and the road above is an ideal vantage point for birdwatchers, as not much separates the road from the bay.

A supreme viewpoint is to be found on the high ground beyond Budle Point, about a mile from Bamborough. It is reached via a footpath that skirts the local golf club.

This is a magical area, disturbed only by the wind and the sea as it lashes against the towering cliffs, where the only other sound is of the screeching gulls above. It is a region, that once visited, touches the soul, and to which you will return again and again.
